People are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates -- sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It's an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don't exist. When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Greer discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery.Surrogates is a 2009 science fiction film, based on the 2005–2006 comic book series of the same name. Directed by Jonathan Mostow, it stars Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell.
The film revolves around the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves.In 2017, use of remotely-controlled androids called "surrogates" allows everyone to live in idealized forms in the safety of their own homes. Because damage done to a surrogate is not felt by its owner, surrogate use is safer and near-universal. FBI agent Tom Greer investigates the death of two individuals who died when their surrogates were destroyed, one of them being the son of Dr. Lionel Canter, the inventor of surrogates. Greer and his partner Jennifer Peters determine that an anti-surrogate "Dread" named Miles Strickland used a unique weapon that disables the fail-safe mechanisms that shield an operator from harm, thus killing them. Greer pursues Strickland into a Dread reservation until his surrogate is destroyed, forcing him to interact in the world without one. The Dread leader, the Prophet, kills Strickland and takes the weapon.Peters is then killed and her surrogate hijacked by an unknown party, who then informs Greer that Andrew Stone, their boss, supplied Strickland with the weapon and ordered the hit on Canter. The Prophet orders that the weapon be delivered to Peters before a stray bullet from military raid on the Dread reservation reveals that he is also a surrogate.

Peters's surrogate takes the weapon to a central hub in the FBI headquarters and Greer heads to the house of Dr. Canter, who has been controlling both the Prophet and Peters. Canter uses the weapon to kill Stone and proceeds to upload its virus to all surrogates, which will kill their operators. Believing that his plan is unstoppable, Canter disconnects from controlling Peters's surrogate and swallows a cyanide pill. Greer then takes control of the surrogate and, with the assistance of the network's system administrator, insulates the virus so the operators will survive but deliberately lets the virus upload, permanently shutting down every surrogate worldwide. The surviving operators are forced to revert to using only their real bodies again.
